Welcome
to Music Education at the University of Victoria, and
to the Don Wright Music Education Wing!
The University of Victoria and Dr. Don Wright share
a passion for music education. Don Wright's involvement
with UVic takes many forms: his insightful and inspiring
Honorary Degree address (for which he received a very
long standing ovation), his longtime support of students
through the Don Wright Scholarships, his joyful encouragement
of our music education endeavors, and his generous contribution
for which the Don Wright Music Education Wing is named.
"Again, I am overwhelmed and proud, and very thankful
because I will be a part of the parades of students
and teachers each year coming in, learning and teaching,
then coming out to bring their music to the world!"
(Excerpt from Don Wright's Naming Ceremony Speech.)
In addition to new scholarships, student resources,
music education initiatives, and equipment, the Don
Wright Endowment Fund is making possible a new ensemble
beginning Fall 2005, The Don Wright Symphonic Winds.
The Don Wright Music Education Naming Ceremony took
place on June 29, 2004. This day was a special day for
the University and the community. As Dr. Wright arrived
on campus he and his daughter Priscilla were greeted
by a community group called "Save our Strings".
The entrance to the Don Wright Music Education Wing
was colourfully decorated with children's drawings and
thank you notes to Dr. Wright - all testimonials to
how UVic music education reaches well beyond campus.
The ceremony was magical and moving, as one person said
"It gave me goose bumps of happiness." |
