Workshop REQUIREMENTS

 

WORKSHOP REQUIREMENTS
You will be using your computer for all work done in this course. It is imperative that it be able to accommodate the work and that it be set up in a manner that allows media productivity to occur easily.
 
COMPUTER
 
1.

PC (Windows)
If you have a PC or Windows computer, you will need the following:

- Intel® Pentium® III or 4 or Intel Centrino™ (or compatible) 800MHz processor
- Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional, Home Edition, or Media Center Edition 2005 with Service Pack 2
- 256MB of RAM (512MB recommended)
- 900MB of available hard-disk space
- Color monitor with 16-bit color video card
- 1,024x768 monitor resolution
- Microsoft DirectX 9 compatible display driver
- CD-ROM drive
- Audio capabilities

Mac (Apple)
If you have a Mac or Apple computer, you will need the following:

- PowerPC® G3, G4, or G5 processor
- Mac OS X v.10.2.8 or v.10.3
- 256MB of RAM (512MB recommended)
- 200MB of available hard-disk space
- Color monitor with 16-bit color video card
- 1,024x768 monitor resolution
- CD-ROM drive
- Audio capabilities
 
WORKSHOP RESOURCES
 
1. Course Manual
The Course Manual consists of instructional materials for Photoshop, Audacity, and PowerPoint.This will be mailed to course participants prior to January 27, 2006.
2. CD-ROM
The Course CD-ROM consists of media and project files containing instruction, jpeg and wav files, as well as other resources for production. This will be mailed out with the Course Manual.
3. Course Website
The Course Website is the central meeting place for course instruction, weekly sessions, project work, and resource acquisition. If you are reading this, you are at the proper course website. This site will be expanded to its larger format on January 27, 2006.
 
INTERNET ACCESS
  In order to use the website, Internet access is required. There are different kinds of access, from telephone modems to cable connections. The faster your connection, the more easy it will be to download media resources.
   
SOFTWARE
 
1. Internet Browser
A "browser" is a software program that delivers Internet content. The most common browsers are Internet Explorer, Navigator, and Safari. If you are reading this page on the course website, you are using a browser to deliver the website pages to your computer.
2. Email Address
You will need an email address in order to conduct communication with the instructor and other course participants, as well as deliver media content to the instructor.
3. Microsoft Word
Most professionals working in the world today use Microsoft Office as their standard communication package. In this "Office" package is a word processing program called, "Word." We will be using Word as a delivery system for our media production work. We are assuming that you already have Word on your computer (If not, contact Don Bergland - bergland@uvic.ca).
4. Microsoft PowerPoint
If you own Microsoft Office, you also have PowerPoint. PowerPoint is a powerful presentation program we will be using as another delivery system for our media production work.We are assuming that you already have PowerPoint on your computer (If not, contact Don Bergland - bergland@uvic.ca).

Adobe Photoshop Elements (or Photoshop)
Photoshop is the world's best program for producing and processing visual images. It is imperative that every professional who is digitally empowered be able to use this program to construct dynamic visual work. If you have Adobe Photoshop 6.0 or above, you can use this for the course requirements. If you do not own a copy of Photoshop, it is most economical to purchase Photoshop Elements. There are a variety of ways you can acquire Elements:

Note - If you have a PC (Windows), you will order Photoshop Elements 4.0. If you have a Mac (Apple), you will order Photoshop Elements 3.0.

Audacity
Audacity is a very powerful and effective audio editing program. It is an Open Source Software program which means it is free of charge. You can download Audacity from the following website:

Nvu
NVue is a program for constructing websites. It is an Open Source Software program which means it is free of charge. You can download Nvu from the following website. Note - This program will not be used until later in the course, so an immediate download is not imperative to start the course):
