Computer SETUP

COMPUTER SETUP
Since your computer is the main "studio" for the work you will be doing, it is essential to set it up in a way that allows for the maximum amount of digital productivity.

MEDIA PLAYERS
Media Players are small utilities which allow you to play certain types of media on your computer. We will need several players for the course itself, but every digital professional should have these players installed on their computers. By clicking on the links below, you should be taken to a webpage which allows you to download and install the players on your computer.
QuickTime Player 7 This allows you to play QuickTIme movie and audio files
Flash/Shockwave Player This allows you to play Macromedia Flash and Shockwave files (Scroll down)
Real Player This allows you to play files created with RealMedia

AUDIO CAPABILITIES
This course will require you to use and create audio files. Since it is necessary to be able to hear these files, you must make sure that your computer is set up to generate the audio at usable volume levels. Volume levels can be set in a variety of places in your computer. These are different for PC and Mac.

  Adjusting Volume for PC (Windows)

  1. QuickTime Test - Click on the icon to the left. A window should open.Wait for a few seconds (for the media to begin downloading) and then click on the "play" arrow at the left. You should see a movie playing and hear audio (a QuickTime .mov file). Close the window.
  2. Flash Test - Click on the icon to the left. A window should open. A Flash production will start playing immediately. You should see a movie only (a .swf file). There is NO audio.
  3. Audio Test - Click on the icon to the left. A window should open. Wait for a few seconds (for the media to begin downloading) and then click on the "play" arrow at the left. You should see a still image and hear audio (an mp3 file). Close the window.
